NOCTURNE for cello, piano and percussion (1993)
NOCTURNE for cello, piano and percussion (1993) - 8 min.
Commissioned by the Core Ensemble
Inspired by Vincent Van Gogh's painting "The Starry Night”, Nocturne (1993) emphasizes the unique coloristic capabilities of the instrumental combination of piano, cello and keyboard percussion (marimba, vibraphone, glockenspiel and crotales). With the vertical pillars of sound (introduction and coda) symbolizing dusk and dawn, the main body of the piece is a soundscape, illuminating nocturnal events; both real and imagined, pleasant and frightening. "Klangfarbenmelodie" (sound-color melody) in which a single gesture is shared among two or more instruments is central to the sonic design of the work.
